Multi-function Optics

Due to the advantages of gray scale technology, multi-functional optics can now be created.
The bottom left image shows an optic that could not be made without the gray scale method. In this picture, a microlens array is shown with a grating superimposed on the lens. If a mixed red/green/blue beam is passed through the optic, the lens function will focus the beam into a spot and the grating function will separate the three component wavelengths resulting in the output seen in the bottom right image. This capability is especially attractive for projection television and increased efficiency for LCD panels.
